School Demolition #9: Colton, SD

At the time of the South Dakota trip I was still working with my Nikon film camera. I shot black and white the entire trip. I enjoy shooting in Black and White however this is one photo I wish I had a color version. The room was bathed in a greenish hue as the sunlight filtered through the leaves of the tree in the window. Perhaps I can convince Just Plain Jane to post her color version.

A pot of gold?

School Demolition #5: Colton, SD

This is my least favorite image of the school shots however I feel it adds to the impact of the story.

A 2nd floor classroom.

School Demolition #3: Colton, SD

I felt slightly on edge the entire time we were at the school as I felt like we were maybe out of bounds on this one. Near the end of our shooting a couple of vehicles drove up. I freaked out trying to figure out a way to sneak out. Turns out the people in the trucks were more freaked out then we were. They said, "Hey" and started in about how they weren't doing anything wrong. They seemed spooked and went to their cars and drove away. I suspect they were doing some illegal salvaging. While I suspect we were trespassing.

School Demolition #2: Colton, SD

The disintegration of small towns seemed to be a theme on our trip. So many of the small towns were closing and combining schools, sometimes students may need to be bused from more than 40 miles away. The towns often seemed a step away from being ghost towns.

School Demolition: Colton, SD

My photo buddies and I went on a photo adventure to South Dakota in May of 2008. Came across a school in Colton in the process of being demolished. Came away with some interesting shots.
